Being Here is OK!

It is a proven fact that students are more successful when they attend regularly.  The topics on this page will keep you out of trouble if you happen to not make it to school.  IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY  to communicate with your teachers should an absence occur.  IT IS YOUR PARENT’S RESPONSIBILITY to notify the school each day, before 9:00 am,  you will be absent.

Flowchart: Alternate Process: REMEMBER…
You need to check in at the office before your return from an absence.
Bring your excuse note, signed by your parents, if there was no call the day before.

NO NOTES COULD MEAN A TRUANCY (that would be a bad thing)
Flowchart: Alternate Process: Did I make it to school on time?
For Elementary Students:
Coming to school after 8:15 yet within the first 10% of the day will be considered a tardy.
Students staying at school for at least 50% of the day, but less than 90% of the school day will give you a half day of a attendance credit. (Full credit is given to students who complete at least 90% of a regular school day.)
If you are in 4th, 5th, or 6th grade and have more than 3 tardies in a quarter, you will have a 30 minute detention for each tardy after three.
For Junior High and Hish School Students:
Reporting to school within the first 15 minutes of the first period will be considered a tardy. (Don’t forget to check in with the office first!)
The office will not issue admit slips for a tardy to any class except for the first period of the day.

A 15 minute detention will be given for the first two tardies, and a 30 minute detention for each additional tardy. For every 5 tardies a student accumulates, a one-day in school suspension will be given.

Flowchart: Alternate Process: The Details of Being Gone…
Secondary student absences will not be classified as excused or unexcused, only as absent.
Pre-Arranged absences are those absences for which the school and teachers are notified a minimum of one day in advance that the student will be absent.
The total number of absences shall be limited to 10 per semester. Any student who accumulates 11 or more absences in any class or classes during a term will fail to receive credit for that class or classes and receive an academic grade of “F” for the semester.
Students participating in school sponsored activities under the direction of a school approved sponsor and representing SPS will not be counted as absent.
Seniors are allowed up to two (2) days for college visitation per school year if the Gudance office sets up the visitation and the parent accompanies the student on the visit. Additional days must be approved by the principal.
In order to practice or participate in any activity held outside of school hours the student must be in attendance all day on the day of the activity. (A possible exception to this could be a pre-arranged absence.)
If the Principal suspends a student, the days for which the student is suspended shall not be counted in the toal of 10 days of allowable absences.
Exceptions that may be made to the attendance policy, with the approval of the secondary principal, include the following:
Documented medical excuses
Approved family emergencies
Other absences that are approved by the principal
A truancy will be defined as any absence without prior knowledge and/or permission of the school and/or parents. Truancies, regardless of time, will not be tolerated. Truant students will be subject to appropriate disciplinary action. See Board Policy 300.27 – Code of Conduct & Discipline for all students.
Flowchart: Alternate Process: NO P.E. for me….
Excuses from home to keep a student out of P.E. must be on a day-to-day basis unless accompanied by a doctor’s written excuse.
Flowchart: Alternate Process: Late Enrollment / Withdrawing from School:
Students entering school after the 3rd week of the semester will be allowed one-half day for each week of school remaining in the semester.
Any Shelby student who has withdrawn & re-entered, shall not gain or lose days.
Flowchart: Alternate Process: Notification of Student Attendance by the School

Upon reaching the following limits during a semester, the parent and/or guardian will be notified as follows:

1. On the 4th absence, an advisory letter will be sent to the parent/guardian.

2. On the 6th absence, a second advisory letter will be sent to the parent and/or guardian.

3. On the 9th absence, an advisory letter outlining the attendance policy and consequences for additional absences will be mailed to the parent/guardian.
Flowchart: Alternate Process: Can I make up my work?

In a word… Yes!

Students will have two (2) days from the date of their return to school following an absence to make up work missed.

Don’t risk getting a zero!

Talk to your teachers if you need more time! (You can appeal the amount of time to makeup work with your principal.)
Flowchart: Process: If you are a student who is close to missing more than 10 days in a semester. Refer to section 300.28 of the school board policy which can be downloaded from our website: www.shelby.esu7.org (click on the school board icon).
